Samuel Wesleys Madness of 181718Michael Kassler and Associates Pty Limited, 10 Wollombi Road, Northbridge NSW 2063, Australiamichaelk{at}zip.com.au In 1817 the musician Samuel Wesley was confined for a year in Blacklands House, a private lunatic asylum in London operated by Dr Alexander Robert Sutherland. Surviving documents enable aspects of Wesleys case to be reconstructed and indicate that his confinement was an enormous miscarriage of justice.
